I trained as a theatre designer at the Mountview Academy, London (1986-1987) and worked as a set and costume designer in London for some years. A strong social conscience led me to working with a support agency for people with disabilities, mental health issues and elders as a multi-media arts tutor, engaging groups in dance, theatre, art, music and photographic projects. During this period I began a series of paintings entitled ‘Constraint ‘, in oils, on the subject of society’s control of individuals by fashion, particularly focussing on corsetry.
A change of career focussing on social activism, advocacy, research and healing meant that I was away from painting for some years and have only in the last two years become a full time and professional artist. I use my experience in activism and in theatre design in my art, as a means to encourage the viewer to engage with well established events in different ways and to face up to a possible alternative reality.
